70th Arbor Day Event in Yongsan was held at the neighborhood park in Seobinggo, April 8. Mayor of Yongsan-gu, Mr. Sung Jang Hyun and U.S. Army Garrison Yongsan Commander Col. Maria P. Eoff has taken their time to work together to plant trees with thirty-one Garrison soldiers and fifty Yongsan-gu staff members. The trees that were planted are Japanese persimmon tree and Korean azalea.

The event started with Yongsan-gu mayor Mr. Sung Jang Hyun's speech.

"The spirit of spring can be seen throughout our neighborhood with blooming flowers and verdant leaves. It is a great pleasure to have this Arbor Day event with you all on this beautiful day," He said. "Although it is just a little sapling that we plant today, but after a year or two, it will become a glorious tree with beautiful flowers and flourishing leaves."

He expresses his appreciation towards every US soldier who is stationed in Korea, saying "I am sure that this Arbor Day event with US soldiers will become a trigger for enhancement of ROK-US friendship and mutual growth of the two nations."

Right after the speech, U.S. Army Garrison Yongsan Commander Col. Maria P. Eoff gave greetings to all participants. "Today, on this land, using this soil… we will plant more seeds of friendship together which will further nurture the roots we have planted through our various partnerships through the years," Col. Eoff said.

"The trees we will plant here represent our wonderful partnership as we, together, continue to be good stewards of our environment. We have to be good stewards of the land and our partnerships so that we can reap the rewards of both."

After welcoming remarks, Jang Jin Su, Park Greenery Section Chief of Yongsan-gu Office, explained on how to plant trees and things that must be considered when planting. Participants basically followed the given procedures: dig a hole, throw in a mixture of base manure and top soil, stand the tree upright, tread on the soil, work on water supply and fill in the hole.

Pfc. Lee Jae Yoon, Headquarters and Headquarters Company, U.S. Army Garrison-Yongsan, said "I believe what we do here today helps keeping the entire Yongsan community strong for all citizens to enjoy. Also, it is pleasing to know that this event will impact the future to be built on growth and mutual respect."
