PICATINNY ARSENAL, N.J. (April 23, 2015) -- Approximately 300 Northern New Jersey high school students attended the 23rd Northern New Jersey Junior Science and Humanities Symposium (JSHS) March 30-31.

The symposium was a two-day event hosted by the Rutgers University School of Engineering, who held the event at its Busch Campus Center in Piscataway Township, New Jersey.

It was also hosted by U. S. Army Armament Research, Development and Engineering Center (ARDEC), which co-sponsors the annual event, providing engineers and scientists as judges.

This year's top winners included Jessica Li from Kent Place School, who received first place; Mark Sabini from Bergen County Academies in second place; and Paige Hammell from Montville Township High School in third place.

These students received a total of $4,500 in undergraduate tuition scholarships in the amounts of $2,000, $1,500 and $1,000.

They will also compete with 230 nationwide finalists and present their research at the 53rd National JSHS from April 29 to May 2 at Hunt Valley, Maryland.

In addition, the symposium offered awards to the winners and runner-ups in three categories: nanotechnology, robotics and advanced materials science.

Shannon Oscher from Bergen County Academies was the Nanotechnology winner, Mark Sabini was the best in Advanced Materials Science and Manufacturing, and Eswar Anandapadmanaban, Dr. Ronald E. McNair Academic High School, was the best in Robotics and Prosthetic Device Technologies.

As their reward, ARDEC will host a one day 'tour-of duty' this summer, where the winners and runner-ups can meet ARDEC engineers and scientist from each category.

ARDEC employees who supported this event as judges and manned displays in 3-D printing, robotics and modeling and simulations were Devin Swanson, Shahram Dabiri, James Zunino, Hau Do, Samuel Eskarous, Gregory Blair, Anthony Ur and Lt. Col. O'Neal A. Williams.

The Armament Research, Development and Engineering Center is part of the U.S. Army Research, Development and Engineering Command, which has the mission to develop technology and engineering solutions for America's Soldiers.

RDECOM is a major subordinate command of the U.S. Army Materiel Command. AMC is the Army's premier provider of materiel readiness -- technology, acquisition support, materiel development, logistics power projection, and sustainment -- to the total force, across the spectrum of joint military operations. If a Soldier shoots it, drives it, flies it, wears it, eats it or communicates with it, AMC provides it.
