KATTERBACH, Germany - Aviators from Bravo Company, 3-158th Attack Helicopter Battalion flew in support of hot and cold load training and nonstandard casualty evacuation training April 6, 2015 in Latvia.

The training matched the soldiers from Bravo Company with infantrymen from the 2-7 Infantry Regiment, 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, in Ft. Stewart, Ga and the 173rd Brigade Combat Team (Airborne) from Vicenza, Italy, and validated all of the units on their ability to perform the evacuation of casualties in a simulated real-world training exercise as well as hot and cold load training activities.

This was a "wonderful training opportunity that facilitated air to ground integration, as well as the ability to practice CASEVAC as we get conditions set to train in Latvia," said Capt. Jonathan Punio, the commander of Charlie Company, 2-7 Infantry Regiment, 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, in Ft. Stewart, Ga.

Hot load training is when ground soldiers load equipment into a helicopter while the engines are running and the rotors are spinning. Cold load training is the same, but the engines are off.

Nonstandard casualty evacuation training is a hasty technique which involves the usage of helicopters that were not tasked as casualty or medical evacuation operations, and it is used when there are not any other designated evacuation vehicles available.
