FORT HOOD, Texas -- The 407th Army Field Support Brigade conducted a Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Stand-Down Day here, April 3.

On May 17, 2013, then Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel signed a memorandum directing each military branch to implement a Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Stand-Down. The directive contains three major requirements: SHARP leader engagements for all Soldiers, and Department of the Army civilians; SHARP refresher training for all Sexual Assault Response Coordinator/Victim Advocates; and an active review of qualifications for current SARCs/VAs.

"Our intent during Sexual Assault Awareness Month Program is to bring focus to our civilian population and have them understand what they can contribute to the fight against sexual assault," said Sgt. 1st Class Elsira L. Preston, brigade SARC. "We spent a great deal of time on domestic violence as a work related occurrence to make supervisors aware of signs of abuse in the workplace."

In an effort to provide a broad spectrum of training, Preston and Donald Hudson, brigade VA, worked with a number of on-post agencies including Fort Hood Family Advocacy, the III Corps Equal Employment Opportunity Office, the Fort Hood Veterans Affairs Office and the Fort Hood Civilian Personnel Advisory Center.

"We wanted to target our civilian population with today's training, as SHARP training tends to be military focused," Hudson said. "DOD civilians also play an important part of our SHARP program. In addition, we want to remain in compliance with applicable SHARP policies and regulations and enhance efforts aimed at combating sexual harassment and sexual assaults within our ranks."
