FORT BENNING, Ga., (April 1, 2015) -- Fort Benning's post softball team Miken routed Unique's Swamp Donkeys 19-4, and Waddell's Catering and Legends 23-7 during Columbus Spring League action March 25 at the South Commons Softball Complex.

Following a scoreless first inning, Dominic Fielder led Miken's charge in the second inning with a three-RBI home run. In all, Miken collected seven runs on nine hits in the inning to lead 7-0 after two innings.

Miken's bats stayed hot in the third inning with three RBI home runs and one two-RBI homer from Fielder, Jason Mowles, Tyrell Sackett and Armando Prescott, respectively, to lead 14-0.

The Swamp Donkeys got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third with three runs and added their final run in the bottom of the fourth inning, while Curtis Graffam hit a two RBI home run in the fourth inning to put Miken ahead 17-4 at the end of four.

Miken added two more runs in the top of the fifth inning to close out the 19-4 win.

In the second game against Waddell's Catering and Legends, Miken picked up where they left off in the first game with Jedon Matthews leading the charge with home runs in the first, third and fourth innings and a grand slam in the fifth.

In all, Matthews accounted for 15 runs in Miken's 23-7 win with Fielder and Taylor Schmidt contributing two RBI home runs each.

Waddell's scored three runs in the second inning and four runs in the fifth inning in the loss.

Following a slow first inning in Game 1, Miken's head coach Juan Burney said the team talked amongst themselves and got the ball rolling.

"We got together (after the first inning) and talked real quick and said let's put some hits together and string some together," Burney said. "And that's what we did."

Although the team strung together several home runs, Burney said his team is more than just home-run hitters.

"We have finesse hitters," he said. "They all can hit three-hundred (feet) plus and we have two or three that are base hitters, but throughout the lineup we have power and they know when to use it."

Burney said his team is the type of team that can have anyone anywhere in the lineup and still do well.

"Our top four (in the lineup) can be anybody ... and they all know that," Burney said. "They all can hit and they all have power ... I just try not to put a fast guy behind a slower guy."

Burney said he doesn't scout out each and every team, but takes a basic approach to each game.

"We treat every opponent as just another opponent," he said. "We prepare for any team and just go out and play our game."

Burney said his game strategy is to win each inning and to keep his team motivated and focused throughout the game.

Although Miken finished the night with a 5-1 record, Burney said the games they play in the Columbus Spring League are good tune-ups for the tournaments the team will play in throughout the season.

Team Miken competed in the Gulf Coast Bash tournament March 28 in Destin, Florida, coming away in second place with a 4-2 record.
