Soldiers from Tripler Army Medical Center (TAMC) and U.S. Army Health Clinic-Schofield Barracks (USAHC-SB) teamed up with Hawaii community organizations for a homeless outreach event held in Waimanalo, Hawaii on March 28, 2015.
More than 108 volunteers rallied together at the Waimanalo Elementary and Intermediate school to spend the day helping Hawaii's homeless population.
"I am grateful for the opportunity to volunteer and help out the homeless," said Spc. Rebekah Muska, Behavioral Health Tech, USAHC-SB, "Today I'm doing what I do daily as a behavioral health tech, but in an off duty role."
This one-day, one-stop, event offered free services such as medical services, health care screening, substance abuse treatment, entitlement benefits counseling, clothing and toiletries, housing opportunity briefings, identification cards, and even a bounce house and face painting for the children.
All together the outreach was able to assist as many as 120 homeless people while also strengthening the many ties within the community and establishing some new partnerships with local service organizations.
"I would like to express my deepest appreciation to everyone who was involved in the event, either directly or indirectly. Our amazing volunteers carry the weight of this outreach on their shoulders, and do so because they are incredibly giving and caring people, with a heart for service," expressed Chaplain (Capt.) Mark Nikont, Chaplain Clinician, Department of Ministry and Pastoral Care, TAMC, "We could not do these outreach efforts without their help!"
