When it comes to March Madness, the winning coaches always stress the importance of fundamentals. Thus it was when the 70-plus AMCOM 101 PATRIOT 'Final Bracket' gathered Tuesday in the Sparkman Center to hear Maj. Gen Jim Richardson, AMCOM Commander, spell out the key plays that Air Defenders can count on.

"If I don't save you $4 million, I'm going to pay your TDY," the 'Coach' said to the assembled Brigade Commanders. "I know what classes you're going to attend, and if you don't ask questions, I am going to ask you questions."

Dialogue, Discussion

"We train to standard and not to time," Richardson said. "We did this for the aviation community a couple months ago."

Premiere Air Defense gathering

"This is a first-ever and important event," 24-year veteran Col. Brian Gibson, 69th Air Defense Brigade, Fort Hood, Texas said. "Anytime you can get the operators together with the logisticians and all the other enablers, it's a win for the team. This has been a long time in coming. Most of the challenges during my 24 years have centered on answering the question: 'Do I have the operational system as I need it?' Therefore, it's good and beneficial to be able to here at AMCOM."

Maintenance is Maintenance

"You do things a little differently, but our job is to be here to help you," Richardson said. "This is about establishing relationships, and I don't care what rank you hold. I would rather hear from the Warrant Officers and the Sergeants, because I am going to hear from the Colonels anyway."

High-visibility jobs

"As an aviator, and with you as Air Defenders, we're going to roll up our sleeves and get dirty," Richardson said. "Our essential task is to enable sustainable readiness at the point of need. We have to measure where we are against our mission statement. Plus AMCOM is devoted to optimization and being responsive. We have knobs and dials that we can turn to help you and your units."

"The physical and the strategic environments are changing and the budgets are coming down," Richardson said. "We are here today to put money back in your pockets. We are not going to wait for you to call us, we are going to call you to 'Git R Done.'"
