RICHMOND, Ky. -- In less than a decade, chemical weapons storage and destruction at Blue Grass Army Depot (BGAD) will be history. Conventional munitions, the primary mission of the Depot for 73 years, was the topic of discussion of U.S. Rep. Andy Barr during yesterday's meeting and tour with BGAD Commander Colonel Lee Hudson at the installation.
"The primary mission of Blue Grass Army Depot is and always has been the receipt, storage, ship-ment, maintenance, renovation and demilitarization of conventional munitions," says Hudson. "We're a key part of the Army's global material enterprise ensuring our warfighters have what they need, when they need it, where they need it, including ammunition ranging from small caliber to 2,000-pound bombs."
Congressman Barr toured select conventional ammunition storage facilities, Chemical Defense Equipment (CDE) storage facilities, the loading platform site for the construction of a new consolidated shipping center, and was provided updates on the destruction of the chemical weapons.
Reports Hudson, "We have always provided the warfighter with the reliable and lethal ammunition to fight our nation's wars, and will continue conducting this mission long into the future. Blue Grass Army Depot is a Department of Defense strategic asset that provides munitions to the Joint forces located in the Southeastern quadrant of the United States, and is here to stay."
Congressman Barr and Colonel Hudson discussed partnering opportunities, infrastructure improve-ments, and strategic support vision concepts on the Depot that would enhance the readiness with respect to its ammunition and CDE storage missions. The depot continually strives to improve its business processes to enhance effective and efficient mission execution.
Upon departing, Congressman Barr noted, "Blue Grass Army Depot is critical to our national security and the local economy. I very much appreciate the opportunity to visit the Depot and interact with its simply outstanding workforce."
