In the midst of battle, directly in the fray, two individuals fight for dominance; only one will leave victorious.

No singular activity represents a stronger metaphor of life itself than wrestling. Aside from its obvious and immense physical demand, the sport requires participants to possess a high level of mental and emotional grit. In the words of Socrates himself, "I swear it upon Zeus; an outstanding runner cannot be the equal of an average wrestler."

The 2014-2015 wrestling season presented a great deal of obstacles. Due to Vicenza High's transition from Division II to Division I, it was quickly understood that team success would require a massive increase of effort and dedication. Moreover, the team decreased in size, going from a roster of nearly 25, to one of 11. However, the team's coaches simply took this as extra motivation. Since the first day of practice, coaches York, Schroeder, Montanez, and Gustafson made it clear that they wanted each and every wrestler to reach their full potential. By the end of the season, their determinations proved to be fruitful. Nine of the team's eleven wrestlers qualified for the European Championships. Four of those eleven placed in the tournament: Joshua Badillo, 126lbs -- 6th; Robert Maldonado, 152lbs -- 2nd; Marshall Perfetti, 160lbs -- 2nd; Seth Shields, 170lbs -- 2nd.

Along with these accolades, the team learned what it means to truly "leave everything on the mat." The practices that led up to the competitions served a greater purpose than simply prepping our bodies for the matches to come. They taught the team lessons not outlined in any classroom or textbook; they taught the team the value of character traits such as commitment, comradery, and perseverance. To completely devote oneself to the pursuit of self-betterment and to then yield results is a marvelous feeling.

The conclusion of the season can only be described as bitter-sweet. Though thankful for the personal growth and countless good memories, the Vicenza Cougars Wrestling Team (the seniors especially), are disheartened to know that their routine of takedown, breakdown, pin will be interrupted. Although the season has ended, the laughs and pains, victories and losses that acted as teachers throughout the season will not be forgotten.
