Command Sgt. Maj. James P. Snyder serves as the senior enlisted advisor and command sergeant major of the U.S. Army Research, Development and Engineering Command, Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland. Snyder assumed the responsibility March 12, 2015.

Snyder enlisted in the U.S. Army in August 1990. After attending Basic Training at Fort Dix, New Jersey, he graduated from Advanced Individual Training at Fort Eustis, Virginia, as an AH-64 Attack Helicopter repairman. He has a bachelors of science degree from Excelsior College and an associate's degree in aeronautical studies from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University.

His duty assignments include attack helicopter repairman, squad leader, and technical inspector with the 8-101st Aviation Regiment in Fort Campbell, Kentucky. He was then reassigned as a squad leader and platoon sergeant with 1-1st Aviation Regiment, Katterbach, Germany. He was further reassigned to B Co, 2-101st Aviation Regiment as the platoon sergeant and first sergeant. He also served as platoon sergeant and quality control NCOIC with G Company, 52nd Aviation in Camp Eagle, Korea. He was then reassigned as the platoon sergeant for C Co, 2-101st Aviation Regiment at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. During his deployment to Operation Iraqi Freedom I, he was selected for promotion to master sergeant and assigned as the first sergeant for B Co, 2-101st Aviation Regiment at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. While there, he also served as the D Co first sergeant as well as the command sergeant major responsible for the unit's deactivation and move to Fort Riley, Kansas, under the Army restructure initiative. Snyder remained at Fort Campbell after the deactivation and assumed duties as the B Co, 96th Aviation Support Battalion first sergeant. After completion of the Sergeants Major Academy he was assigned as the command sergeant major for 603rd Aviation Support Battalion, Hunter Army Airfield, Georgia.

In his most recent assignment Snyder served as the command sergeant major of the 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division. His deployments include Bosnia-Herzegovina, Operation Iraqi Freedom I and III, as well as Operation Enduring Freedom VIII, X, and XIII.

He is a graduate of all levels of the Noncommissioned Officer Education System, the Air Assault Course, Equal Opportunity Leaders Course, Aviation Life Support Equipment Course, and the Strategic Deployment/Unit Movement Course.

His awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, NATO Medal, Good Conduct Service Medal, Combat Action Badge, Master Air Crewmember Badge, and the Air Assault Badge. He was awarded the bronze and silver medal for the Order of Saint Michael.

Snyder is married and has two children.
