DAUKANTO SQUARE, Lithuania -- Soldiers from the 1st Platoon, Lightning Troop, 3rd Squadron, 2d Cavalry Regiment, participated in an Independence Day ceremony, here, Feb. 16.

Lithuania celebrates Independence Day each year on Feb. 16, in recognition of the date Lithuania declared its independence from Soviet Russia and established its statehood in 1918. It wasn't until March 11, 1990, that Lithuania declared its independence from the Soviet Union.

The 2d Cavalry Regiment is deployed to Lithuania as part of Operation Atlantic Resolve, which is a demonstration of continued U.S. commitment to the collective security of NATO and to enduring peace and stability in the region, in light of Russia's illegal actions in Ukraine.

Army Europe is leading the Operation Atlantic Resolve enhanced land force multinational training and security cooperation activities taking place across Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland to ensure multinational interoperability, strengthen relationships among allied militaries, contribute to regional stability and demonstrate U.S. commitment to NATO.

In light of Russia's illegal actions in Ukraine, Operation Atlantic Resolve is a visible demonstration of U.S. commitment to the security of NATO allies. In meeting our global security commitments, the United States must have strong, committed and capable allies, which is why we have fought, exercised and trained with our European allies for the past 70 years.
