REDSTONE ARSENAL, Ala. -- U.S. Army Materiel Command, or AMC, leaders highlighted lessons learned and the work the command is doing across the globe during a briefing to the chief of staff of the Army, Jan. 29.

Gen. Dennis L. Via, commanding general, AMC, told Army Chief of Staff Gen. Ray Odierno that AMC is globally engaged and regionally aligned, focused on providing support to the combatant commanders and warfighters, during an "AMC Futures" brief.

"You often say the Army provides the enabling foundation for the joint force," Via said. "AMC is doing our part -- in conjunction with Forces Command [FORSCOM], Training and Doctrine Command [TRADOC], and Installation Management Command [IMCOM] -- to do that."

The Army's ability to transition back to self-sustained readiness, and AMC's role in that transition, was a hot topic for the chief. He stressed the need to grow Soldiers' ability across the force to maintain their equipment and become more self-sufficient.

"We've given AMC greater responsibility to help us ensure we deliver that readiness," Odierno said. "It's important that we develop our systems and capabilities so that everyone understands how we sustain readiness."

Via and the senior leaders from AMC's major subordinate commands briefed Odierno on AMC's role in current operations, including Operation United Assistance in Liberia, Operation Inherent Resolve in Iraq, and Operation Freedom's Sentinel in Afghanistan. Leaders also discussed the Organic Industrial Base, Foreign Military Sales, and the role of Life Cycle Management Commands in Army sustainment.

Senior representatives from FORSCOM, TRADOC and the Army staff also participated in the event, with Via noting the collaboration across commands in posturing AMC to best support the total Army.

"I'm impressed by how our major commands have done a better job at integrating and synchronizing," Odierno said.

Via assured Odierno that AMC is aligned with the Army Operating Concept and prepared to support Force 2025 and Beyond.

"Two things make our Army different than any others -- our NCO [non-commissioned officer] corps and ability to sustain ourselves," Odierno said. "And AMC provides us that capability."

Odierno last visited AMC headquarters for the previous "AMC Futures" in May 2014.
