FORT GORDON, Ga. -- A volunteer awareness and community outreach day was held at the Eisenhower Army Medical Center on January 20, 2015 to observe Dr. King's birthday and celebrate his life of action.

"Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. committed his life and his work to expanding opportunity for all Americans and his vision to transform our communities is more important than ever," said Sgt. 1st Class Michelle Berres, EAMC Equal Opportunity Officer.

The event featured the Fort Gordon Youth Challenge, Army Community Volunteer Coordinator, the Red Cross, Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers (BOSS), Moral, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR), the Glen Hills Elementary School, the Fisher House, the Kendrick Memorial Blood Donor Center, and the Family Readiness Support Assistant (FRSA) program.

Attendees could learn more about Dr. King's life and the opportunities for volunteering in the community.

"We wanted to do something this year to really reflect the true intent of the MLK National Day of Service and allow people to see all the ways they can get involved in the community," said Berres.

In addition EAMC will conduct a food drive from January 9-31, with non-perishable items being collected and donated to the Golden Harvest Food Bank distribution center located in Augusta, Ga.

Golden Harvest was selected because it serves the CSRA by distributing the donated food to all food banks, soup kitchens, and to over 30 counties at their request.
