ROCK ISLAND ARSENAL, Ill. -- U.S. Army Sustainment Command was recognized for outstanding Combined Federal Campaign participation at an award ceremony Jan. 15 in Heritage Hall. Four organizations received awards for their contributions, including ASC, Rock Island Corps of Engineers, Rock Island Arsenal Garrison, and First U.S. Army.

The Combined Federal Campaign is designed to support and promote philanthropy through an employee-focused and cost efficient program, providing federal employees the opportunity to improve the quality of life for a wide variety of people. The CFC is a partnership between employees, the federal government, and charitable organizations. It gives federal employees the unique ability to individually direct their support to specific charities dealing with issues they deeply care about.

Maj. Gen. Kevin O'Connell, commanding general, ASC, was the keynote speaker and presented the awards.

"Federal employees continue to make the CFC the largest and most successful workplace fundraiser in the world," said O'Connell. "The Combined Federal Campaign's theme, 'Give for Good,' is important to me. It represents our commitment to care for those who need assistance and improve the quality of life for all."

ASC received the High Participant Award for a large organization, with 23.7 percent of personnel participating in the CFC. ACS personnel contributed $57,373 in 2014, supporting a wide variety of charitable organizations.

"Every donation is important, no matter how much it is," O'Connell said. "We had six organizations exceed twenty thousand dollars in donations: ASC, JMC, JMTC, ACC-RI, Corps of Engineers and USAG-RIA."

Rebecca Freeman, CFC co-chair, Iowa/Illinois bi-state area, presided over the ceremony.

"I have a real passion for charitable giving," she said. "As someone with a fairly good job, I feel it's important to give as much as possible. I would really like everyone to see what the CFC does and see how important it is to give back to the communities we live in."

Total donations for RIA were $374,214 in 2014, down from $410 thousand in 2013. However, the value of the average gift in 2014 was $319 per person, up from $298 average gift per person in 2013.

"Gandhi said, 'The true measure of any society can be found in how it treats its most vulnerable members,'" said O'Connell. "CFC provides us with an easy, once a year method to help those in need."
