FORT DRUM, N.Y. -- Members of the 10th Combat Aviation Brigade staff took part in the weeklong Mission Command Training Program that wrapped up Sunday at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., in preparation for Warfighter Exercise 15-3, which will take place at Camp Atterbury, Ind., at the end of the month.

The MCTP, which is staffed by members of the U.S. Army Combined Arms Center, is designed to support unit collective training, as directed by the chief of staff of the Army, in order to train leaders and provide commanders an opportunity to train on Mission Command in Unified Land Operations.

"The MCTP was an invaluable training experience in preparing the brigade staff to conduct the operations process against a near-peer competitor," said Col. Michael C. McCurry, 10th Combat Aviation Brigade commander. "It allowed us to gain a shared understanding across all sections and warfighting functions, build our team, and re-focus on doctrinal concepts."

During the training, primary and special staff sections received instruction on the military decision making process from MCTP cadre before working to generate the tactical order that will be issued before the execution of the Warfighter Exercise.

"The engagement of our staff with the senior mentor, (retired) Brig. Gen. (William) Wolfe provided the 10th CAB with invaluable experience and insight on how to incorporate the CAB into a dual-pronged combined-arms maneuver and wide area security mission set," McCurry said.

Wolf, the senior mentor to the 10th CAB staff during the MCTP and former commanding general of the U.S. Army Combat Readiness Center at Fort Rucker, Ala., provided insight based off of past command experiences to assist the brigade during the military decision making process.

The Warfighter Exercise scenario is designed to incorporate high-intensity conflict with a "near-peer" adversary in a decisive training environment -- a change from the counterinsurgency fight experienced by the 10th CAB over the last 14 years of combat in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"The Warfighter Exercise will be an excellent opportunity for us to step back from the counterinsurgency environment and participate in a combined-arms maneuver fight against an adversary with similar capabilities," said Maj. Sam Redding, 10th Combat Aviation Brigade operations officer. "The training we received from MCTP got us into this mindset and will help set us on a course to achieve our training objectives."

The 10th CAB will train alongside the 38th Infantry Division of the National Guard, headquartered at Indianapolis, Ind., during Warfighter Exercise 15-3.
