Piatt assumed duties as U.S. Army Europe's deputy commanding general, and commander of U.S. Army NATO, July 23, 2014 after serving more than a year as the commanding general of the Seventh Army Joint Multinational Training Command, in Grafenwoehr, Germany.

"Cynthia and I have enjoyed our time here in Germany immensely and will remember Europe as one of our best assignments, a place where we made great friends and worked with a team of unparalleled professionals," said Piatt following news of his reassignment.

"It is an honor to have served with some of the greatest soldiers and civilians in the Army here," Piatt added, "and I look forward to continuing to serve and fulfilling duty to the American people in our nation's capital."

Piatt began his military career as an enlisted soldier when he entered Army service in 1979 from Somerset, Pennsylvania. He was commissioned as an Army officer in 1987. "Walt is yet another example of one of the tremendous leaders we're cultivating here in the leadership development laboratory that is U.S. Army Europe," added Hodges.
