COMMUNITY HIGHLIGHTS

Special programs, updates, community campaigns, classes and more.

Misinformation regarding expired U.S. driver's licenses

There is misinformation circulating around U.S. military installations in Germany that if your stateside driver's license is expired, you run the risk of being arrested and your vehicle seized by the Polizei. This is incorrect, and the matter is being addressed between U.S. and German officials. Additionally, German authorities are working with Army Europe to allow expired U.S. driver's licenses to remain valid as long as a person is affiliated with the Department of Defense. This applies to all personnel who fall under SOFA, as long as the person's stateside Department of Motor Vehicle office acknowledges the exemption, which 36 of the 50 states do. If you run into problems with off-post law enforcement regarding this matter, visit the legal office for assistance. For a complete state-by-state list of extension policies, please visit http://www.grafenwoehr.army.mil/StateDLRenewalPolicies.pdf.
