ANSBACH, Germany (Dec. 22, 2014) -- On Dec. 11 at Ansbach Middle High School, students and teachers participated in the second annual "Hour of Code," a global event that engages millions of people in learning basic computer programming.

During the Hour of Code, students from more than 180 countries access the www.code.org/learn website and develop basic programming skills.

"We want you to start just to see how easy it is," said Kenneth Miller, educational technologist at AMHS who has been working with computers for 21 years, which includes experience coding. "Then we want you to come back and do more. The website Code.org makes coding easy. When learning is fun and engaging, we tend to be more motivated to perform better."

Computer science teacher Janet Cook said she believes Hour of Code is important because the initiative encourages students to learn a new technology skill.

"This is the only time that many students get exposed to programming," Cook said. "If students didn't have this Hour of Code, they would never have an opportunity to find out if they have an aptitude for coding."
