Four U.S. Army Test and Evaluation Command personnel from headquarters and White Sands Missile Range participated in the 2014 Society of Women Engineers annual event, October 23-25, in Los Angeles where female middle school students participated in a variety of events, including a career fair, workshops, hands-on exhibits and seminars.
SWE, established in 1950, offers women engineers a place and voice within the engineering industry. SWE outreach programs inspire the next generation of women engineers and technologists, according to SWE.
More than 7,000 women from around the world attended the three-day event and participated in the career fair where ATEC personnel engaged with participants and educated them on career opportunities under the Pathways Intern Program and Pathways Recent Graduate Program, said Christina Bryant, ATEC STEM outreach coordinator.
"We want to raise awareness among middle school-aged girls of the possibilities and opportunities available in STEM related career fields," said Bryant. "During this event, and others like it, we are able to make contact with educators to formulate future partnerships that will aid in enhancing STEM education and competencies for ATEC, and the Army's, future workforce."
During the 'Invent It. Build It,' event October 25, more than 500 middle school-aged girls participated in numerous hand-on exhibits aimed at promoting careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.
Next year, SWE will take the annual event to Nashville, TN October 22-24, 2015. For more information about SWE, visit http://societyofwomenengineers.swe.org.
