(PRESIDIO OF MONTEREY, Calif., Dec. 10, 2014) -- Ahead of what many weather experts are saying may be the worst storm to hit the Monterey Bay area in the last five years, the Presidio of Monterey is taking preventive measures to help ensure the safety of community members and to control flooding and runoff on the installation.

The storm could begin as early as tonight, but fully hit Thursday morning, possibly during the morning commute.

It is expected to bring heavy rainfall and the potential for strong damaging winds into the Monterey Bay area and Central Coast. Possible impacts include widespread downed trees; debris scattered on roads creating hazardous driving conditions; falling power lines creating the potential for power outages; potential property damage; and difficult driving conditions.

Additionally, there is a flash-flood watch and high-surf advisory in effect for the region.

According to the National Weather Service, excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause elevated levels on small creeks and streams and possibly flooding and ponding of water in urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses as well as other poor drainage areas and low lying spots. Additionally, country roads and farmlands along the banks of creeks, streams and other low lying areas are subject to flooding.

The weather service advises community members to monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action should flash flood warnings be issued. Additionally, driving conditions may be very poor at times during this event.
