ANSBACH, Germany (Dec. 11, 2014) -- Holiday lights and decorations abound, but no light shines as brightly as a joyous smile shines. Around the world, men, women and children come alive with the joy of the holiday season.

And no smile warms more than the smile of a Family member or friend. Families and friends comprise our community. Throughout the year Families and friends have extended a helping hand in times of need and have celebrated together in times of joy. Everyone knows their Army Family can be counted on to be available.

As we begin this time of year, I want to encourage Families to reach out to single Soldiers and family members of deployed Soldiers. Show them what it truly means to be a part of the Army Family. Invite them over for a traditional dinner and share the warmth that characterizes our community. Find out what they are doing for New Year's Eve. Everyone in our community is part of our Army Family.

Home is where you go for shelter, where you go to find strength, and where you go to find comfort and comfort others. Our Army Family is at home in Ansbach, Germany. Germany is not only one of the most picturesque countries to celebrate the holidays, it's one of the friendliest nations in the world. If you have yet to see one of Germany's Christmas markets, visit one and immerse yourself in the rich culture of our host nation. During my time here, I've found the German people to be extremely friendly and hospitable no matter what time of year. Be sure to meet your German neighbors and share the holiday spirit with them.

The time around Christmas and New Year's Day is a time of social activities and celebrations with Family and friends, but there is also an increased risk of accidents and injuries.

Social events held at work or home should be about the company you share, not the liquid you drink. If you drink alcohol, drink responsibly. If hosting a holiday party, set the example by acting responsibly and by ensuring everyone gets home safely. Have the number of a taxi on hand for guests. Remember that no one who has been drinking should get behind the wheel!

If you're looking for fireworks, visit a city's New Year's event where professionals handle the risk. Be careful of irresponsible behavior and stray fireworks. Remember, fireworks on post are prohibited!

Leaders and first-line supervisors can make a difference during the holiday season. Practice and teach others safety and risk mitigation. Ensure you and your teammates incorporate risk management into your plans. Engaged leadership saves lives!

It is my sincere hope you make the most of this time of the year spend quality time with Family and friends. Celebrate the holidays responsibly and take care of each other so that all of us can ring out 2014 on a good note and bring in 2015 with cheer. Happy Holidays!
