When the Pilgrims celebrated their first harvest in the new land, they had many reasons to be grateful. Now, more than 350 years later, Americans have many more reasons to celebrate Thanksgiving. Our citizens enjoy a freedom unmatched by any other country in the world today. While gathering with family and friends on this holiday let us take a moment to give thanks to our fellow Soldiers and civilians who continue to put their lives on the line to preserve the precious freedoms we hold so dear.

As we enjoy this holiday, please remember to put safety first. I want leaders to talk to their Soldiers about accident prevention before they are released for the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. In preparation for the holiday, leaders shall check on their Soldiers, wherever they reside, ensuring that Army risk management is employed universally across our Command. Command mitigation strategies that we can easily implement include: wearing seat belts, avoiding distractions while driving, employing a designated driver, wearing ALL required motorcycle PPE, heeding ocean warning signs, and not going to unguarded beaches.

Soldiers and Civilians: you, your Army teammates, and Family members follow the rules of the road, incorporate sound risk management practices in all you do and ask yourselves each day, "What did I do to increase the Safety of my team, TODAY?"

I expect every 8th TSC Soldier and Civilian to do his or her part in protecting the force. My Safety Policy Letter-14, published Nov. 14, 2014, outlines many key safety requirements discussed in it , and I expect every member of our team to have read it before departing on this holiday.

Please take the opportunity to enjoy the much deserved time off and spend time with your Family and friends.

Happy Thanksgiving, and have a safe, enjoyable holiday weekend.
