CAMP ZAMA, Japan (Nov. 26, 2014) -- Sgt. Maj. of the Army Raymond F. Chandler III visited Camp Zama Nov. 24 and 25 as part of a tour of Japan and Korea.

Chandler toured the U.S. Army Japan and I Corps (Forward) headquarters building before meeting with Gen. James C. Boozer and Eric C. Dostie, the commander and senior enlisted adviser for USARJ, respectively.

After observing training exercises and talking with junior enlisted Soldiers during breakfast and lunch, Chandler visited with the senior leaders of the Japan Ground Self Defense Force, at Camp Ichigaya, Tokyo.

Chandler said the bilateral relationship between USARJ and the Japan Ground Self Defense Force is a "strong one."

"It's a mature relationship, but it is also changing as we move forward," said Chandler, "I am very excited about what I saw."

Chandler conducted a town hall, and talked about professionalism.

Chandler said he expects Soldiers, commissioned officers and non-commissioned officers to recognize that being a professional takes an extra effort.

"It's not just a job, it's a career," Chandler said.

Chandler also answered Soldier's questions and addressed their concerns about new Army policies during the town hall.

"It is important to bring questions from the Soldiers back to the chief of staff of the Army and the secretary of the Army, so they can have an idea of what is on Soldier's minds," he said.

Before departing Camp Zama, Chandler conducted a roundtable discussion with enlisted senior leaders to address the importance of leadership in the U.S. Army.

"I am proud of what I have been able to do as a Soldier," said Chandler, "but the inspiration for me is the men and women who continually volunteer to serve their country."
