FORT RILEY, Kan. -- The Our Community Spouses Club of Fort Riley presented a $1,013.27 check to the Johnson Cancer Research Center at Kansas State University Nov. 20 at Riley's Conference Center.

Lisa Hatt, treasurer, OCSC, said it was a pleasure handing over the check, but donating is what the club is all about.

"We raise money throughout the year, and we basically give it all back, minus some of the operating expenses," Hatt said. "We give almost everything we earn that year back into the local community."

The money was raised in November when the club conducted a ticket mania at the Ogden Community Center, Ogden. The ticket mania allowed local businesses to donate more than $2,000 in merchandise, which the club in turn gave as prizes.

Marcia Loche, communications and outreach coordinator, Johnson Cancer Research Center, K-State, said the research center is very grateful for the donation and will be using the money toward a general fund that supports cancer research and education at K-State.

"We have competitive award programs that the faculty can apply for," she said. "And then, we have a committee that selects the most promising projects that apply. So it would either go toward something like that or toward our under graduate cancer research award program, which gets undergraduates into laboratory research."

OCSC will be hosting another ticket mania in February to benefit the Fort Riley Combined Scholarship.
