CAMP ARIFJAN, Kuwait -- The 402nd Army Field Support Brigade conducted a noncommissioned officer of the quarter board here, Oct. 16.
The NCO of the quarter board was designed to test up-and-coming leaders' knowledge base, military bearing, and overall confidence. This was the first NCO of the quarter board conducted by the command in Fiscal Year 2015.
The board consisted of four voting members and a recorder who was a nonvoting member. The president of the board was Command Sgt. Maj. Cheryl N. M. Greene, 402nd AFSB's senior enlisted adviser. The Soldiers who attended the board were: Sgt. 1st Class Alicia Lyons, Army Field Support Battalion-Kuwait supply operations NCO, Sgt. 1st Class Mark Payne, Army Field Support Battalion-Qatar maintenance management NCO, and Sgt. William Taylor, 402nd AFSB public affairs NCO.
Taylor was selected as the 402nd AFSB NCO of the quarter.
Each board member asked a series of questions from selected topics. Each candidate was scored in accordance with their personal appearance, oral expression, conversation skills, current events, military programs, regulations, basic Soldiering, and the Soldier's overall attitude.
All military boards require a great deal of preparation and dedication; yet there are some fundamental differences between the different types of boards. The key is not answering every question correctly, it's more about a Soldier's confidence, presentation of knowledge, and military bearing.
Taylor will represent the 402nd AFSB at the 1st Theater Sustainment Command's NCO of the Year Board and is currently preparing for the Camp Arifjan's Sgt. Audie Murphy Club Induction Board.
Also for the month of October, Taylor participated in a local Officer Direct Appointment Board, here, in which he was recommended for officer appointment. All three board members voted that he is "highly recommended" for officer accession. This recommendation allows him to be eligible for the Headquarters Department of the Army Officer Selection Board for fiscal year 2015.
The Officer Direct Appointment program is an Army Reserve program designed to allow qualified noncommissioned officers to become reserve officers. The program is extremely competitive with less than 20 percent of applicants receiving commissions. Taylor's packet will go forward to the United States Army Reserve Command for consideration.
