ANSBACH, Germany (Nov. 10, 2014) -- The 12th Combat Aviation Brigade held a Veterans Day ceremony at Memorial Park by the brigade's headquarters at Katterbach Kaserne Friday.

Representatives from 12th CAB, U.S. Army Garrison Ansbach and several veterans organizations attended and participated in the event.

Dale Nagan, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Department of Europe service officer, served as the guest speaker.

"Undoubtedly we would not be standing here today without America's Soldiers', Sailors', Marines', Airmen's and Coastguardsmen's desire to liberate others from the dark riff of oppression, hopelessness and fear," said Nagan, during his remarks. "Their quest for freedom echoes on the battlefields of Europe, the beaches of Normandy, on the islands of Iwo Jima and Okinawa, throughout the jungles of Vietnam, the deserts of the Middle East, and now the mountainous terrain of Afghanistan.

"Our Armed Forces have a longstanding record of triumph over evil," continued Nagan. "In each case, they have fought defending the same values upon which our great nation was founded."

Lt. Col. David A. Markiewicz, USAG Ansbach executive officer, and Command Sgt. Maj. Mark A. Kiefer, USAG Ansbach command sergeant major, helped place one of several wreaths set up on display at the park.

The Ansbach High School Junior ROTC performed color guard duty.

Dwight Johnson, VFW Post 9342, attended the event, and felt it important to remember

"[It's] to remember what we gave for this nation," said Dwight Johnson, VFW Post 9342. "Half of us wouldn't be here today if it wasn't for our fallen comrades."
