Fort Leonard Wood senior leaders participated in a two-day strategic review and professional development event, which focused on promulgating the Army's priorities and assessing the Fort Leonard Wood campaign plan.

After a review of key Army and Training and Doctrine Command initiatives, such as the Army Operating Concept, Army University and Human Dimension, Maj. Gen. Leslie Smith, Maneuver Support Center of Excellence commanding general, discussed why purpose is as important as tasks.

"It all comes down to understanding and explaining to others 'Why do we do what we do,'" Smith said.

More than 100 senior military and civilian leaders at battalion level and above attended, including personnel from the local Marine, Navy and Air Force detachments.

Subordinate commanders briefed their objectives against the campaign plan and engaged the group with discussion regarding challenges and opportunities for this fiscal year.

The review culminated with an experiential terrain walk, which provided leaders the opportunity to better understand the missions, services, and capabilities of other Fort Leonard Wood tenants and organizations.

Smith reminded the group of the post's primary mission to develop leaders and train Soldiers, Marines, Sailors, and Airmen while encouraging the team to embrace and encourage change by finding ways to improve training, education and operations.

"You've got to step back and think about the big picture and what we're doing and optimize your organization's performance and contributions to the mission," Smith said.

"Make sure you are focusing on the right things," Smith emphasized.

Smith reminded leaders that only they can establish the climate and vision for their organizations.

The MSCoE vision is: "The premier Army Center of Excellence with engaged leaders and staffs, focused on meeting the needs of our military, Families, civilians and communities; developing adaptive resilient, professional expert leaders, warriors and forces; and, providing Maneuver Support and Protection capabilities that enable success under any condition."
