Team,

This month, Ann and I are not only saying goodbye to an outstanding organization, we are retiring from the United States Army after 36 years of service. Since we are both military brats, this moment is bitter sweet for us as all we know is Army life.

In total, we had the privilege of spending nine years living, working and training alongside our Allies here in Europe and we couldn't have asked for a finer organization to be a part of as our last assignment.

We are honored that we were afforded the opportunity to serve with you -- the Soldiers, Civilians, Families and host nation supporters of United States Army Europe and we feel it necessary to thank you all for what you have done and continue to do every day. You are all dedicated professionals that make the mission happen for USAREUR, and our Nation, on a daily basis.

I take great comfort in the fact that no matter what uncertainty lies in the future for our Army, the engaged leadership, culture of teamwork and absolute professionalism I have seen throughout this command will conquer any challenge we may face.

The Army Profession, to me, has always defined what I wanted to be from a young age and what I have become today. I can think of no greater calling than to serve our Nation alongside the great men and women of our Armed Forces and their Families. It has been an honor and a privilege to serve, and in many cases lead, the less than one percent of those who volunteer to serve a higher ideal.

While I am very proud of my career, I always served as part of a unit, and nothing I personally accomplished was more important than serving the higher cause or greater good. At the end of the day, I was part of a great Team of wonderful men and women from all across our Nation that achieved more together than we could have ever done on our own. Thank you to all who have served before me and continue to serve. I am humbled to have been a part of your ranks.

We will greatly miss seeing you all in your formations and communities, but we sincerely wish you all nothing but the best! Enjoy the upcoming holiday season in Europe!
