Soldiers from the U.S. Army Military District of Washington (MDW) and 3d U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard) performed a special Twilight Tattoo, "Salute from the Chief," Oct. 30, 20614, at Whipple Field on Joint Base Myer Henderson Hall, Va.
The host, Gen. Raymond T. Odierno, 38th Chief of Staff of the Army, recognized five Americans for their outstanding service in support of the United States Army, veterans, Soldiers and families during an award ceremony at the Twilight Tattoo.
Mr. Tom Donohue, of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce; Ms. Suni Harford, of Citi Group; Mr. Tom Werner, of Red Sox Foundation; and Mr. Bob Woodruff, of The Bob Woodruff Foundation, were awarded the Outstanding Civilian Service Award. The award is the third-highest public service honor the U.S. Army can bestow upon a civilian.
"[These men and women] are shining examples of the human spirit that defines our country," said Odierno. "We are indebted to each and every one of you, and tonight we are proud to salute and honor you."
Twilight Tattoo is a military pageant that tells the story of America through performances by The U.S. Army Blues, vocalists from The U.S. Army Band Downrange, The Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps, and The U.S. Army Drill Team.
Lt. Col. Blakeslee Connors, commander, 4th battalion, 3d U.S. Inf. Regt. (The Old Guard), said he enjoyed being able to help recognize these awardees for their service.
"We are glad to be part of the recognition of these individuals for all they have contributed to our Army," said Connors, commander of troops during the Twilight Tattoo. "It is important we recognize and foster the attitude of service to our Soldiers."
He added that we wanted to honor them with this performance and showcase the long history of our Army and nation.
The event lasted about an hour; however, Connors said the gratitude of the faithful service for these individuals will truly have a lasting effect.
"This was a great opportunity to highlight some of the significant things they have done and continue to do every day," said Connors. "We will remember and appreciate all the support and love they have given us."
