The U.S. Army announced Oct. 29 the selection of three technology development contracts for the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV) family of vehicles. As the central component of the Army's and Marine Corps' tactical wheeled vehicle strategy, JLTV will provide balance of performance, payload, and protection with increased transportability and expeditionary mobility over current tactical vehicle systems.
The three companies awarded under the full and open competition process are BAE Systems Land & Armament Systems - Ground Systems Division; Santa Clara, CA; General Tactical Vehicles (A Joint Venture of General Dynamics Land Systems, Inc. and AM General, LLC); Sterling Heights, MI; and Lockheed Martin Systems Integration - Owego; Owego, NY.
Developed in accordance with DoD acquisition guidance, JLTV is a joint U.S. Army, U.S. Marine Corps, and U.S. Special Operations Command (SOCOM) program with the Army designated as the lead service.
"JLTV is one of the first programs to fully implement the Office of the Secretary of Defense's September 2007 competitive prototyping policy which called for two or more competing teams producing prototypes through Milestone B, with the goal of reducing risk and synchronizing requirements," said Maj. Gen. John R. Bartley, Program Executive Officer Combat Support & Combat Service Support (PEO CS & CSS), located at Warren, Mich.
"This is a critical step toward providing our Soldiers with ever more capable combat vehicles. We've challenged industry through a competitive source selection process, to optimally balance payload, performance, and protection. Today we've selected the three most promising contenders to receive the resources to further develop their ideas. We look forward to the results of this 27-month technology development," said Lt. Gen. Ross Thompson, Military Deputy to the Assistant Secretary of the Army, Acquisition, Logistics and Technology.
During the 27-month technology development phase, the vehicles and associated equipment will undergo a series of performance and reliability testing, which will include assessments from the joint war fighters.
