CAMP ZAMA, Japan (Oct. 17, 2014) -- The Hispanic Heritage Month observance was held on Oct. 9 at the Camp Zama Community Activity Center, here, to recognized the Hispanic cultures that impact military communities.
The observance was hosted by the 35th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion and themed "Hispanics: A legacy of history, a present of action and a future of success."
After a selection of musical performances from Sabre K-Liente, which is comprised of members of the U.S. Army Japan Band, and a dance performance from the 35th CSSB salsa dancers, guest speakers addressed the audience.
"To me Hispanic heritage means embracing the past and honoring the present," said Tabatha Rodriquez, a guest speaker and the spouse of SFC Jose Rodriguez, assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, U.S. Army Garrison Japan.
As a military spouse, Rodriguez said she has been station all the world, U.S and overseas, and has had the opportunity to be immersed in a variety of cultures.
"Being exposed to different cultures… has increased my knowledge in the differences and similarities in the ways we raise their children, cook, the values we posses, and above all the contributions we collectively provide to the community," said Rodriguez.
"In our own way…we give back to the community by being who we are."
After a presentation of awards, Lt. Col. Brian Lesiak, commander of the 35th CSSB, gave closing remarks.
"We have to embrace and celebrate our differences; it's those differences that unite us."
