About 100 people braved the rain and cooler temperatures Saturday to participate in Fort Leonard Wood's third monthly 5k run at the Davidson Fitness Center.
Crossing the finish line first was Christopher Cheek, 50th Multi-Role Bridge Company, 5th Engineer Battalion, with a time of 19 minutes and 22 seconds. Cheek has competed in two of the three monthly 5ks.
"I'm just filling in for my commander," Cheek said. "My commander told me to win this thing for him since he wasn't going to be here."
Those participating said they are appreciative to Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation for offering the monthly runs free of charge.
"This is my first 5k run with MWR," said Nii Akofio-sowah, runner and member of Team Red, White and Blue. "It's good to have free runs for people to participate in because sometimes money is a factor."
Kirsten Ouimette, Medical Command, made the run a Family event with her husband, daughter and Family dog.
Ouimette said she is glad to see this month's run focusing on domestic violence awareness.
"This is our second one (run)," Ouimette said. "People need to be aware of the resources that are out there because lots of times they think they are alone and don't know who to turn to."
The morning kicked off at 7:45 a.m. with Ginella Lane, Family, Morale and Welfare and Recreation personal trainer, leading a warm-up session inside the fitness center and ended with a Kid's Half Miler walk/run.
Keeping with the theme of Domestic Violence Awareness for October's run, Army Community Services placed photos of victims of domestic violence around the DFC grounds. Each photo also shared the victim's story on the back for individuals to learn more.
Information tables were set up inside DFC due to weather and included organizations such as Army Community Services and Genesis House.
Created by Col. Andrew Herbst, Fort Leonard Wood Garrison commander, and sponsored by FMWR, the "5k for Fun" series is held the second Saturday of each month. Future events are scheduled for Nov. 8 and Dec. 13.
"It's a great way for people to stay in shape while promoting health and awareness for our patrons," said Rob Steinmacher, FMWR Recreation aide and coordinator of Saturday's race.
