CAMP HUMPHREYS -- The community-wide Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration event was hosted by the 3-2 General Support Aviation Battalion, 2nd Combat Aviation Brigade, Oct. 8, in the Community Activity Center.

Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic heritage Month from Sept. 15-Oct. 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestor came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.

This year's theme is "Hispanics: A legacy of history, a present of action and a future of success." This theme reflects the growing strength of the Hispanic community and the impact they will have on the future success of America.

Prior to the introduction of the guest speaker was the entertainment portion of the event, which featured Soldiers from various units joining together to perform four different styles of Latin American dance: merengue, combia, bachata and duranguensc.

Command Sgt. Maj. Estevan Sotorosado, the 2CAB command sergeant major, was the guest speaker for the event.

"When thinking of the best way to have today's event, I thought it was important that we get together with our Soldiers, of all ethnic groups, because in all reality we operate as a family," he said. "As we recognize the hours, days, months, and years that you have given to make other's lives better -- I would also like to make the point that through your selfless service work, you also improve your knowledge of my culture. Today we have the honor to celebrate Hispanic Heritage."

During his presentation, Sotorosado highlighted Hispanics throughout military history -- Master Sgt. Roy P. Benavidez, a Medal of Honor recipient in 1981; and the Korean War-era 65th Infantry Regiment "Borinqueneers;" -- along with present day Hispanic contributions within the Department of Defense.

"Hispanics have exerted a profound influence on our country, through their strong commitment to family, faith, hard work, and public service. They have enhanced and shaped our national character with centuries-old traditions that reflect their multi-ethnic and multi-cultural customs. That is why today, we are "Army Strong."
