CAMP HUMPHREYS -- During Fire Prevention Week, Oct. 6-10, Dean Turner, the Humphreys Fire Prevention Chief, provided tours of the new fire station to students from Humphreys Central Elementary School. Turner spoke to the children about fire safety surrounding the theme "Working Smoke Alarms Save Lives: Test Yours Every Month." The children watched a Sparky the Fire Dog video and then received a tour of the station, including seeing where the firefighters sleep when on shift, their workout room and the dispatch center. Once done there, they went out in the stalls to see the fire trucks, equipment and firefighter gear. They were also greeted by Sparky. Before departing, the children were provided with goody bags and plastic helmets. Fire Prevention Week was established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire, the tragic 1871 conflagration that killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures and burned more than 2,000 acres. The fire began on October 8, but continued into and did most of its damage on October 9, 1871. -- U.S. Army photo by Steven Hoover
