9/10/2014 - JOINT BASE LANGLEY-EUSTIS, Va. - -- U.S. Army Soldiers and civilian employees participated in the Home Run for Health event to round-off the Army's Performance Triad plan, hosted by McDonald Army Health Center at Fort Eustis, Sept. 3.

During the event, MCAHC's Army Public Health Nursing department equipped participants with pedometers, fruit and information about leading a healthy lifestyle.

According to the Army Medicine website, the Performance Triad is a comprehensive plan to improve readiness and increase resilience through public health initiatives and leadership engagement.

The Performance Triad began in June with a 10,000 step challenge, where participants tracked a goal of 10,000 steps each day for 30 days. In July, the triad challenged partakers to sleep between six and eight hours each night for ten nights. The challenge for August encouraged eight combined servings of fruit and vegetables each day for eight days.

"The Performance Triad is all about reevaluating what we can do to become more resilient," said Maj. Tameka Bowser, Army Public Health Nursing chief. "With this Home Run for Health event, we can take all three factors - sleep, activity and nutrition - and tie them together with our overall resilience."

The 21-day Home Run for Health challenge encourages participants to track their sleep, daily activity and eating habits while rewarding themselves with a point system for achieving personal goals.

"We use an e-mail group for those who have signed up to help each other and share success stories and struggles throughout the process," said Bowser. "I send out information on the value of sleep, and improvement tips for sleep and nutritional intake."

The Home Run for Health is a way for the community to tie all the aspects of the Performance Triad together to support each other in improving overall resiliency, said Bowser.

"We have to concentrate on the community as a whole to make us a stronger work force," said Bowser. "This event allows us to put it all together so the entire military family can exercise healthy-living choices and model healthy behaviors for each other."
