CAMP HUMPHREYS -- More than 300 people, primarily sporting the color pink, came out to participate in the 4th Annual Camp Humphreys Breast Cancer Awareness Run/Walk, held at the Humphreys High School track, Oct. 4.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is an annual campaign to increase awareness of the disease. Breast cancer is the second most common kind of cancer in women. About 1 in 8 women born in the United States will get breast cancer at some point.

The festivities began with a presentation of the colors by the HHS Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps color guard, along with the playing of both the Korean and U.S. national anthems.

Carol Chipps, a breast cancer survivor, followed with some opening remarks. She encouraged all women to get their yearly mammograms and to do self-examinations on a regular basis.

Then, all in attendance completed the first lap around the track in silence, in deference to those who have lost the battle to breast cancer. Following that, almost all continued around the track, some running, some walking.

"The weather was great, and a number of agencies stepped up to donate giveaways and set up displays," said David Elger, the Area III Health Promotion Coordinator and the event organizer. "That helped to make it a successful event."

He added that "more than 230,000 will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year, including 1,900 men, and 40,000 are expected to die. Early detection saves lives. When breast cancer is caught early, the five-year survival rate of localized breast cancer is 98 percent. There are currently 2.8 million breast cancer survivors living in the U.S."

Besides those who were there for the run/walk, the following community organizations participated in the event: Family and MWR Fitness and Youth Sports, American Red Cross, Humphreys Girl Scouts, Exchange New Car Sales, Community Health Promotion, USO, Army Community Service Exceptional Family Member Program, Navy Federal Credit Union, Community Bank, Betty L. Simmons Chapter #166, Directorate of Plans, Training, Mobilization and Security, Sexual Harassment/Assault Response and Prevention Program, the HM/HS Advancement Via Individual Determination S2S (Student 2 Student) and the Humphreys Commissary.
