HOHENFELS, Germany -- Teams of Soldiers geared up and hit the trails of Hohenfels for a grueling seven- kilometer Combat Cross-Country race, Sept. 26.

"This is not a fun run," said Chris Cornelison, Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation sports and fitness chief. "This is one of those 'old school' Soldier events that brings back a real Soldier athletic competition atmosphere."

The course comprised two laps through some of Hohenfels' notoriously tough terrain.

"That first hill was practically straight up," panted one competitor.

Soldiers ran in teams of 5-7 members, loaded down with gear and guns. Though they could split up along the route, teams had to cross the finish line with at least five members together.

"It was an awesome race, a lot harder than we expected, but we finished as a team and we did well," said 1st Lt. Jacob Alexander, Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 4th Infantry Regiment, whose team took third place with a time of 47:40.

Bravo Co., 1-4th Inf. Regt., took second with the 2nd Air Support Operations Squadron out of Rose Barracks garnering the top spot with a time of 44:54.

"It was a great course, steep, lots of hills, and we had to constantly adapt our efforts to the course," said Senior Airman Michael O'Connor, team captain for the 2nd ASOS.
