Retired Lt. Col. David Hartline, a Vietnam War veteran, spoke to a group of Soldiers Sept. 17 as part of the Combat Leader Speaker Program.

Hartline has written three books about his military experiences, the most notable being "Vietnam, What a Soldier Gives."

During an interview after his speech, he said writing the book has provided him an outlet to talk about his experiences in Vietnam.

"I just want to express my appreciation for what the Army is doing by taking veterans like me and bringing us in to speak to the younger generation," Hartline said. "For years, Vietnam veterans were not included. Coming home from Vietnam was just as bad as serving in combat for a lot of veterans. … The way history has recorded the outcome of the war has led many people to say that Vietnam was the only war the U.S. has ever lost. In my mind, I don't think we lost. The military didn't lose the war. The troops didn't lose the war -- politicians lost the war."

In addition to his work as an author, Hartline has remained active in veterans organizations since his retirement. He is the American Legion's senior vice commander of Alabama and will be recognized in November as the state's veteran of the year.

He said his love for the military began as soon as he was drafted and began training at Fort Benning in January 1968.

"It's amazing for me to realize how comfortable it felt when I got into training," Hartline said. "It was like I had a chance to prove that I was as good as anyone else. The military provided that for me. I took the stance that the military had given me an opportunity I wouldn't have had if I hadn't been drafted."

During the interview, he said today's climate reminds him of the Vietnam War era, and encouraged young Soldiers to stay positive.

"I just want young Soldiers to know that even in the chaos that's happening around the world, it's important to stay true to yourself, stand firm and be ready for any situation," Hartline said. "Do the best you can, and the outcome will provide itself."
