LONDON (Air Force News Service, Sept. 12, 2014) -- The United States took home its first medal of the 2014 Invictus Games on its first opportunity here, yesterday.
Sgt. Ryan McIntosh, an active-duty infantryman from San Antonio, earned a bronze medal in the men's 100m for lower limb dysfunction or amputation race, with a time of 12.71 seconds.
"I actually was in last place coming out of the blocks," he said of what he called a "slow start" to the race.
McIntosh rallied halfway through the race to pass five athletes, earning third place in the first final of the day.
"One thing I do is focus on the race, not where I am or what the competition looks like," he said.
Later in the day, he will go on to compete in the men's 4x100m relay in one of the final races of day one at the Invictus Games.
"This is definitely the biggest military event that I've ran in," he said. "It's just wonderful to see everybody coming back from their injuries to compete in this event."
The Invictus Games run through Sept. 14, at the site of the 2012 summer Olympics, and will feature more than 300 athletes from 13 nations competing in various Paralympic-style events, including swimming, track and field, seated volleyball, wheelchair basketball, and wheelchair rugby.
