Fort Belvoir, Va. (Sept. 4, 2014) - Retired servicemembers in the National Capital Region can learn about resources available to them at Fort Belvoir and in the local community during the Directorate of Human Resources Retiree Appreciation Day at Barden Education Center from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., Sept. 12.

Retirees will be able to speak with representatives from the Department of Veterans Affairs, Tricare and the Association of the United States Army. Organizations like Air Compassion for Veterans and The Fairfax at Belvoir Woods, a Sunrise Senior Living community; will be at the event to share information about their services. The American Red Cross will also have representation at the event for retirees who want to give blood.

"This is a way for retirees to come and speak with someone who can let them know what's going on with their benefits, but also services available to them," said Gwendolyn Lott, DHR, retirement services officer. "We just want them to know what's going on with benefits and other services for retirees."

A continental breakfast will be provided, plus a raffle with items from the Fort Belvoir Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation, the Golf Club and the Officers' Club.

Retirees can get their blood pressure checked and a flu-shot during the event. They can also get their car registration done and a new identification card.

"Retirees can get their vehicle registration done as long as they have the proper paper work," said Lott. "They have priority at the ID card facility that day, too."

The National Association for Uniformed Services will also be at the event; a group Lott feels retirees should learn about.

"They lobby to congress to help the military maintain their benefits," said Lott.

U.S. Army Garrison, Fort Belvoir Commander Col. Michelle D. Mitchell will speak during the event. She wants retirees to know they are a valued part of the Belvoir community and their service is appreciated.

"We want to hear their concerns and let them know the latest updates of what's going on in the community, and what changes are coming along," said Mitchell. "The biggest message is 'thank you and we appreciate you.'"

It is important retirees are aware of changes on post or with anything regarding their benefits, said Mitchell.

"We haven't seen any changes that will affect this particular population," said Mitchell. "But, if there are, they can feel comfortable and confident that Fort Belvoir is going to make sure they are kept abreast."

Mitchell is excited for the opportunity to show the retirees appreciation for their service.

"Once people have served their county, it's important we give back and do our part to take care of that population," said Mitchell. "We are excited about the day."
