ACC Teammates,

Labor Day, a national holiday dating back to 1882, recognizes the economic and social achievement of American workers. Though the holiday has been celebrated in the United States on the first Monday in September since the 1880s, it has transformed into a celebration to mark the last of summer and the return to school after summer vacation. It's also the official end to the Army safety campaign, "101 Critical Days of Summer."

Even though the summertime threats begin to fade, as we transition into autumn, the primary threat to our readiness remains the same - motorcycle and POV accidents. The primary risks haven't changed: driving while impaired or fatigued, speeding, distracted driving (texting and talking), and not wearing/using protective equipment. Leaders must ensure that everyone under their command and control understand the risk involved with these activities, on and off duty. Units should have appointed motorcycle mentors and all riders should be identified and appropriately trained. Ensure Soldiers use the TRiPS system, prior to going on leave or pass when planning POV travel outside the local commuting area or long distances. Leaders should also conduct safety briefings, prior to the holiday, focusing on the specific risk areas.

We encourage each of you to take time with family and friends and enjoy the last remnants of summer. While enjoying water-related activities, remember that with these activities comes added responsibilities. Don't swim alone and only swim in approved swimming areas. When temperatures are extreme, take necessary precautions to reduce the possibility of heat injuries by drinking plenty of water and not over doing outdoor activities, such as boating and motorcycle riding.

Soldiers will have a Military training holiday on August 29, and we will celebrate Labor Day on September 1. We authorize you to take 59 minutes off from your last duty day before the Labor Day weekend.

We appreciate all you do for our Soldiers, Army and nation and challenge each of you to place safety at the top of your holiday plans. Please enjoy a safe and happy Labor Day weekend.
