WIESBADEN, Germany - New teachers and administrators had a chance to meet their unit partners and fellow Wiesbaden educators during a Teachers' Welcome event Aug. 20.

"I'm looking forward to another great year," said Dr. Dell McMullen, Department of Dependents Schools Kaiserslautern District superintendent, during the welcome back event in Wiesbaden High School's multipurpose room.

"There's not enough that we can say about the partnerships that we have here in our Wiesbaden schools," said McMullen, recognizing Lt. Col. Ryan A. Howell for going above and beyond in supporting Wiesbaden Middle School during the 2013-2014 school year.

Peter Witmer, U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden's school liaison officer, welcomed back members of the supporting units and new units during the event, saying that Soldiers and civilians are vital in helping mentor students, supporting school activities and showing youths the real-world applications of science, technology, engineering and mathematics in the classroom.

This year Aukamm Elementary School teams up with U.S. Army Europe's Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, Hainerberg Elementary School with the 66th Military Intelligence Brigade, Wiesbaden Middle School with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Europe District and the Defense Science and Technology?Center, and Wiesbaden High School with the 5th Signal Command.

"A lot of the partnerships that occur are magical," Witmer said, praising the outstanding service provided by community-school partners.

"I appreciate your hard work," McMullen told the Wiesbaden teachers and administrators while pointing out that last year TerraNova scores improved in four of five core subjects during standardized testing. "Thank you for everything you are doing."

She also asked teachers to continue to let her know about innovative ways technology is being used in local classrooms so that she can share best practices with fellow educators. "I saw incredible uses of technology across our district last year. We'll share your ideas across the district."

Edward "Doug" Earle, U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden's deputy to the commander, also welcomed the educators back for the start of the new school year.

"You are all very important to this community," Earle said, recognizing the teachers' commitment to local military school children.

Earle also said community officials will be working closely with the schools to ease parking concerns caused by ongoing construction in Hainerberg Housing. "We will continue to monitor the situation, and we want to hear your suggestions."

In addition to recognizing new school administrators, Greg Hatch at the helm of Wiesbaden High School and Barbara Mueller, principal of Aukamm Elementary School, McMullen introduced her staff at the district headquarters -- assistant superintendents Carl Albrecht and Frank Simone, and education operations manager Paula Miller.
