Looking back at Picatinny: Charity
PICATINNY ARSENAL, N.J. -- Mary Bennett presents a donation of $560.89, the Loading Branch employees' contribution to the Cancer Fund, to Capt. C. Smedebush.

PICATINNY ARSENAL, N.J. -- Once again, it is time for the annual Combined Federal Campaign here at Picatinny and elsewhere.

Many community members attended the kick-off meeting last week, and several hardy souls will step out for the cause in the five-kilometer walk and run.

The attached photo, which appeared in The Picatinny News of May 16, 1952, shows generosity is not a new phenomenon at Picatinny.

The picture shows Mary Bennett presenting to Capt. C. Smedebush a bag. Inside the hefty sack is a donation of $560.89, the Loading Branch employees' contribution to the Cancer Fund.

Most readers are possibly too young to realize that the donated amount of $560.89 was an extremely significant sum of money on May 1, 1952, the date Picatinny photographer James Chiarella took the photograph.
