ANSBACH, Germany (Aug 19, 2014) -- At the end of every summer at U.S. Army Garrison Ansbach, many different garrison organizations and services assemble for the community showcase. This year the event is scheduled to take place at Urlas Housing Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

New members of the community -- as well as residents already familiar with the garrison -- can find out what is available to them, register with different organizations and learn about updates for existing services, clubs and organizations from the Ansbach community.

This year the community showcase has been moved to the shopping center at Urlas. A large tent has been put up in the back of the Commissary parking lot to house the many different divisions of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation, including Army Community Service, Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers, the on-post bowling centers, the Terrace Playhouse, the Auto Skills Center, the on-post fitness centers and Outdoor Recreation.

Private organizations, such as the Ansbach and Illesheim spouses and civilians clubs and the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts are also sharing the tent. Banks, the veterinary and the health clinics, religious services, self-help stores and the housing office can also be found in the tent.

The Alcohol and Substance Abuse program offers a hands-on -- or rather a goggles-on -- experience to simulate the dangers of alcohol and substance abuse. Sexual Harassment/Assault Response and Prevention program representatives will be available to give tips on how to intervene as a bystander or report an incident of sexual harassment or assault.

Several different organizations will be in the shopping center itself.

In the lobby area of the Post Exchange, parents can find a table run by Child, Youth and School Services, who are there to inform Families about fall sports and numerous other activities and services. Parents can also get in touch with Department of Defense Dependent Schools-Europe representatives, administrators and principals from the community's schools or find out about bus routes and the "free and reduced lunch program" from the School Liaison Office.

The German-American Friendship Club -- Outreach-KONTAKT Franken -- will talk about the club's activities and upcoming events. The garrison's public affairs office will be on hand to inform the community about the garrison website, Facebook pages and the Franconian News.

The Army's Ready and Resilient program representatives will help visitors use the Global Assessment Tool and other resources.

The Ansbach Tourist Office will have information about the area and upcoming events or guided tours.

While the community showcase is mostly designed for Soldiers, Civilians and Families new to the community, current residents will find plenty of useful information and chances to catch up and reconnect with organizations and services after the long summer break. It is an opportunity to meet the faces behind programs, register for classes, services or organizations and find out everything one might need or want to know for a successful year in the Ansbach community.

Before the showcase, a "Back-to-School" fun run for the whole community starts on site. Registration for the run begins at 8 a.m. until 10 minutes before the race at 9 a.m. Children ages 6 through 11 run with their parents at 9 a.m.; youths ages 12 through 17 start shortly before the adults run at 9:30 a.m. Strollers and pets on leashes are allowed during the adult run.
