FORT DRUM, N.Y. -- Men and women from all over the country, and all over the world, serve in the ranks of the Spartan Brigade. These Soldiers volunteered to fight the nation's war on terrorism and were willing to give their lives in sacrifice for their country and fellow Soldiers.
The fallen will continue to live on in the hearts of their Families, friends and fellow Spartans.
?Their Families will always be a part of the Spartan Brigade legacy and are known as Gold Star Families.
Soldiers of 3rd Brigade Combat Team have successfully completed four deployments to Afghanistan. Over the course of those deployments, 100 Spartan Soldiers gave their lives.
Their names, engraved in honor on the Spartan Memorial, will always be remembered.
Gold Star Families are invited to participate in monthly and annual Mountain Remembrance ceremonies outside in Memorial Park across from the division headquarters.
During the annual Mountain Remembrance week, Gold Star Families are invited to dine with the Soldiers who served alongside their heroes.
Battalions maintain relationships with their Gold Star Families through community events, too, and are always welcome to visit.
One fallen Spartan Soldier was Medal of Honor recipient Sgt. 1st Class Jared C. Monti. In memory of Monti and his Family's sacrifice, Pine Plains Physical Fitness Center was rededicated as Monti Physical Fitness Center. The center maintains a display about Monti and his story.
While the 3rd BCT is scheduled to be inactivated today, the memory of the fallen will remain in the hearts of the Gold Star Families, their comrades and their units.
