KANDAHAR AIRFIELD, Afghanistan--Lt. Col. Mark Susnis assumed command of the Army Field Support Battalion-Kandahar, 401st Army Field Support Brigade from Lt. Col. Roy Speaks Aug. 11 in a ceremony here at the Redistribution Property Assistance Team yard.

Col. Matthew Ferguson, commander of the 401st Army Field Support Brigade, who presided over the ceremony, welcomed Susnis to the team.

"The Soldiers, civilians and contractors of the 4th battalion deserve an experienced and engaged leader to help them further shape their operating environment and lead them into the final set for resolute support," Ferguson said. "Lt. Col. Mark Susnis comes to us from the U.S. Transportation Command headquarters and is an experienced strategic transporter and seasoned logistician. His experience, skill set and leadership style are uniquely suited to command this battalion at this time in its history."

Ferguson also thanked Speaks for his professional and personal dedication to the mission during his 13 months of leading the battalion.

"Under the command of Lt. Col. Roy Speaks, the 4th battalion has set the standard for support to the Warfighter in every respect. Roy you can be very proud of the difference you've made throughout the Combined/Joint Operations Area-Afghanistan in helping set the stage for Resolute Support and equipment readiness across the Army. Thanks for the job well done and we wish you and your family the best as you embark on your next adventure."

Upon assuming command, Susnis thanked Ferguson and the AFSBn-Kandahar team for the opportunity to command the organization.

"I consider myself fortunate to join the ranks of an extremely talented and professional organization of Soldiers and civilians. Together we will execute an unprecedented sustainment and retrograde operation in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and the transition to Resolute Support," Susnis said.

Susnis' awards and decorations include: three Bronze Star Medals, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, two awards of the Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Afghanistan and Iraq Campaign Medals, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Korea Defense Service Medal, and the NATO Medal.
