FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. -- Campbell Crossing is encouraging on-post residents to hit the streets and come out to the annual National Night Out celebration at the Village Commons at Hammond Heights.
The nationwide event will be held on post from 4 until 7 p.m., Aug. 5, and focuses on promoting crime prevention programs as well as strengthening partnerships between police organizations and the local community. As such, representatives from the Fort Campbell Police Department, as well as other local law enforcement agencies from outside the installation, will be on hand to do demonstrations and provide valuable services in one central location.
"The National Night Out is a national event that we like to participate in because it's to help promote the awareness of crime prevention," said Bethany Harrell, Campbell Crossing community services manager. "We actually partner with our MPs here on post and other surrounding police departments to put this event on. It is just a great event to get our neighborhoods involved and to promote this great cause and this basic idea of crime prevention."
The community can expect K9 unit demonstrations and an appearance by Hopkinsville motorcycle cops, along with SWAT vehicles on display and more. Master Sgt. Blair Bollar, installation provost sergeant, encourages all those with young children to come out for free, valuable resources, including child safety seat inspections and child identification registration.
"[There] are going to be ID kits for the kids, missing persons ID kits, fingerprinting for the kids," he said. "They're going to be doing demonstrations. Our focus is we're just doing partnerships with the community to help them out."
In addition to mingling with local law enforcement and other community agencies, Fort Campbell residents can enjoy free, Family activities throughout the event. Activities include inflatables, face painting, a photo booth and a game truck, as well as plenty of free food and a balloon artist. One game that will provide a new challenge is Bubble Ball, where each player is encased in an inflatable, clear ball during a soccer game.
"The whole idea behind the event is to gather as a community, so I think that alone is a great cause to come out beyond the educational aspect of it," Harrell added. "It's great learning, but also you get to see your neighbors, meet new neighbors and it's a big community building event."
Campbell Crossing will be unveiling a partnership with Terracycle, a nationwide recycling program, during the event as well. Those who bring in baby food pouches and personal care/beauty product packaging and drop it off at the event registration table will be entered in a drawing to win a $100 gift card. The partnership with Terracycle is an extension of Campbell Crossing SYNERGY program, which is designed to give on-post residents information on energy usage and to reduce their environmental impact. According to the recycling program's website, terracycle.com, the company works with more than 100 brands in the U.S. to help recycle or repurpose products that would usually go to landfills.
"What they do is they take, typically, items that are not really easily recyclable, and they create some products out of them," Harrell said of Terracycle.
Residents can also bring baby food pouches and personal care/beauty product packaging to their respective community offices for collection. Over time, other recyclables will be collected according to the guidelines of the Terracycle program, Harrell said. "There's so much that is going on," Harrell said. "Just in general it's a great event for everyone. We have activities for all ages."
