Describe your job.
I provide advice and guidance to commanders and staff on safety issues during the planning and conduct of operations and exercises, with the ultimate goal of preventing accidents. I also manage the command's safety program and ensure our policy and procedures are compliant and up-to-date.
What do you like best about your job?
The thing I like best about being a safety professional is the opportunity to get involved in a wide range of activities. Safety is a part of everything we do, from using ammunition/explosives, flying aircraft, acquiring equipment, to riding motorcycles. Learning about these things while serving others and striving to keep them safe is something I enjoy and find fulfilling.
How did you get into the safety career field?
My safety career started right out of college when I was hired into the Army Safety Engineer Intern Program. The program consisted of 18 months of college and professional course work at the Red River Army Depot and ended with my assignment to a permanent duty station with 3rd Corps Support Command in Wiesbaden, Germany. Though I never thought I'd end up working for the Army as a safety professional, it was a great program and has afforded me some very interesting experiences.
What is your most memorable experience during your time here at MDW?
Getting a glimpse of the President during the 2014 National Memorial Day Observance was something I think I'll always remember. Also, as a musician, occasionally getting to hear performances by members of The U.S. Army Band as part of my job is a nice perk!
Would you recommend working here to other federal employees? If yes, please explain why.
I would recommend working for this command to any federal employee. The variety and uniqueness of the missions here were what drew me to the command, and they make coming to work each day different and interesting. The location of the headquarters here at Fort McNair is also hard to beat due to the scenic setting, its history, and its central location near the sights and events of the D.C. area.
