ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND, Md. (Aug. 12, 2014) -- Dr. Joshua Rubinstein recently became the team lead for the Visual Perception and Target Acquisition Research group at the U.S. Army Research Laboratory Human Research and Engineering Directorate's Perceptual Sciences Branch.
Rubinstein, a research psychologist, has been working for ARL for over two years. Before coming to Aberdeen Proving Ground, he spent two years at Picatinny Arsenal, N.J.
Although somewhat new to ARL, Rubinstein has worked for the federal government for more than 14 years. He spent 12 years at the Department of Homeland Security's Transportation Security Lab. There, he conducted applied research and system testing on all aviation security man-in-the-loop systems, mostly in support of the Transportation Security Administration. Rubinstein said his main focus was on the visual-search, X-ray screening task for carry-on luggage.
"The PSB [Perceptional Sciences Branch] has provided me with very supportive and collaborative colleagues," Rubinstein said. "The opportunity to conduct research in this environment is priceless."
A native of South Brunswick, N.J., Rubinstein and his family relocated to Maryland in June. He and his wife have one daughter. An area in which Rubinstein feels he's learned some of his toughest lessons in life are from is his young daughter.
"I have a 3-year-old daughter, so I'm still going through it -- still learning valuable lessons," he said. "She has helped me learn patience and how to pick my battles. And I've learned that not all tantrums are worth fighting."
Rubinstein said that outside of work he enjoys his family time and, when he has time, kayaking, playing poker and scuba diving.
