REDSTONE ARSENAL, Ala. -- The U.S. Army Materiel Command bid farewell to Maj. Gen. Gerald E. Lang, the assistant deputy commanding general for the National Guard in a ceremony here, July 14.

Gen. Dennis L. Via, AMC commanding general, hosted the ceremony honoring Lang.

"This is a huge loss for our command," said Via. "He has been instrumental in ensuring that we have the right relationships between the active, guard and reserve component. We can't accomplish the mission without having the total force which includes the National Guard and the reservist and that's what General Lang represents to us."

Lang served as the principle advisor to AMC leadership on all matters impacting the Army National Guard.

Lang coordinated support and provided guidance to the Army National Guard logistics units/assets related to AMC's worldwide mission. He represents the 365,000 Soldiers of the Army National Guard on the AMC command staff for mobilization, equipment, training, deployment and policy issues for the National Guard.

"It's a logisticians dream to be here to see what you do worldwide," said Lang. "I've never been at a headquarters where everyone is so kind. This is a headquarters that enjoys working with one another and that is because of the command climate here."

Despite fiscal challenges, Lang believes the partnership between the active component and the National Guard and the Reserve force is vital. "This partnership needs to continue regardless of the end strength. We are all here for the same mission and that is to win our nation's wars."

Lang plans to retire after more than 40 years of the service to the nation.
